Project plan 2023-2025

This project plan presents the research goals within avalanche research at NGI for 2023-2025, project organization - including potential for external collaboration. It presents the work package structure and specific research tasks to be carried out by the applied avalanche research group at NGI during the period.

In the project period 2023-2025 the following topics are in focus:

WP 1: Avalanche Formation and Release

- Variable size of release areas and release masses
- Forest effects on snowpack properties
- Probabilistic release models including topography, climate, and forest effects

WP 2: Avalanche dynamics

- Full-scale experiments and data analysis
- Development of a new dynamical model for improved velocity representation
- Validation and testing of MoT-Voellmy and MoT-Voellmy-PSA for
run-out and powder cloud representation

WP 3: Avalanche interaction

- Vulnerability of buildings and people in buildings impacted by avalanches
- Quantitative risk assessment
- Impact pressures on objects
- Avalanche event documentation and reporting

RIR: Research Infrastructure Resources (RIR) and Sensor Technology

- Operation and maintenance of the full-scale avalanche test site Ryggfonn
- Operation and maintenance of Fonnbu research and meteorological station
- Further development of remote sensing activities
